christmas activity cardsRPM...RAPID PROMPTING METHOD….I will share my personal experience but also trying to reflect the approach from “Literacy&Reading for Non-Speaking and Limited Speaking Students book by RPM Practitioner Lenae Crandall. It is quite a good book for a beginner on RPM.It covers lots of lesson plans and how to run a session.
How to run an interaction which leads to a possible communication: Sit next to or just opposite your child. Create a controlled area. A table is better but not absolutely necessary. You need your child’s cooperation. You need to build her/his tolerance slowly, even one response will be good enough for a start. Verbal phrasing will be sufficient. Shaping behaviour will take time. Present the picture while you are trying to interact. You need also to prepare a choice response with YES AND NO written on a small piece of paper. You can also do this while you are having an interaction rather than having prepared it in advance. When your child makes a choice, you help her/him phrase it, saying “That’s right, it is a ” Perhaps you also need to prompt at the beginning, depending on your child’s interest and knowledge of a topic. If you are trying RPM for the first time, you may need to support your child with prompts, such as bringing the child closer or giving a positional prompt to responses. You need to read Soma Mukhopadhyay’s books and watch her videos from her web site. It will give you some ideas about a RPM session. I will also try to upload a practice from my son and me later. There are different levels you will see. I am just taking the first level such as directing the communication to make a young person able to make a choice. Later you will build up pointing, using alphabet stencils in RPM. THE EXPAND questions are reasoning, thinking and opinion questions. You may want to add more questions. These are communication targets. Please ignore the EXPAND part of models of conversation until your child becomes more comfortable and confident in interaction with you.“Literacy and Reading book by Lenae Crandall. When I work with my son I count on his mood, his interest, his cooperation with me, his tolerance in order to push him a bit further to expand a topic we are talking about. How far I can build up our conversation depends on how a session flows. My son is on a level that I can bring open end questions and expect him to answer. He can point to letters on alphabet board and type and write. So he is on different level. On this project I am presenting the beginner level, it takes time to build up all those skills but it is rewarding. So Expanding questions on a FACT can be done but you know your child better the judgement is yours. Building up skills for both you and your child is an advantage to expand the subject and gets easier if you do it regularly. PAIRING OUR CHRISTMAS FILES TO LINK POSSIBLE INTERACTION THROUGH LANGUAGE. These conversations I have created, you may create your own if you like.CHOICE BASED basically at the beginning.
